Cypress essential oil.

Please dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil before using it for massage.

Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)

Family name: Cupressaceae  Image

This essential oil is extracted from the Cypress tree.

Mind; Talkative, irritable people benefit by its calming action. Seems to have a soothing effect on anger – apparently cleanses the spirit.

Body; Comes into its own where there is excess of any kind, particularly fluids. Therefore, useful in oedema, excess bleeding, nose bleeds, heavy menstruation, sweating, particularly of the feet as well as incontinence.
With its vaso-constricting effect on the veins it can be helpful with varicose conditions.

Generally has proved helpful with the reproductive system, particularly menstrual problems such as pre- menstrual tension and the difficult side effects of the menopause i.e. hot flushes, hormone imbalances and irritability.

Effect on the skin; Exerts a balancing action over fluids. It controls excessive loss of water and can therefore be helpful to the mature skin. Sweaty and oily skin may also benefit.

Precaution; Regulates menstrual cycle so best not use during pregnancy. Its effect on varicose veins is well known, but care should be exercised in applying the oil – actual massage might be too heavy.

One thing to remember: Cypress is a strong astringent and depurative (removes toxins) so it good in regulating the body’s production of liquid.

Aromatherapy massage – what is it?

Using a blend of essential oils for a massage is called aromatherapy massage. Body or part body massage is the most effective way to use essential oils but note the essential oils need to be blended in carrier oil. I use customised blend of essential oils for each massage treatment in Roscommon and Athlone. For example I might blend Bergamot, Frankincense and Ylang Ylang in a carrier oil for some who feels like their immune system is struggling and they are in a heighten state of anxiety or suffering from panic attacks. The blend is absorbed into the persons system and continues to work after the massage treatment creating feelings of calm and well being.

The time taken for the essential oils to pass around the body is dictated by the individual metabolic rate. i.e. children will react quicker to oils than adults.

Ylang Ylang essential oil – it’s uses

Please dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil before using it for massage.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Ylang Ylang oil is distilled from the flowers of the plant.

During the process a number of different grades of oil are taken off. The first is ylang extra, and it is the most expensive and most desired by perfumers.

3 succesive distillations follow – grade I, II & III which are progressively less complex and lose more of the subtle top notes

The first oil that is drawn from the flowers is the best quality, though subsequent yields have similar therapeutic features, but the perfume is less refined.

Mind; Excellent for excitable conditions regulating the adrenaline flow and relaxing the nervous system, resulting in a feeling of joy. It could well ease feelings of anger, anxiety, shock, panic and fear.

Body;

It is very good at regulating the flow of adrenaline and thus slows its effects reducing stress, anger, frustration, panic and fear.

It is very good at balancing the hormones making it valuable for problems associated with the reproductive system. It is an antidepressant.

Its sedative properties are helpful with rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat and high blood pressure. Has a relaxing effect on the nervous system.

Ylang Ylang is heralded by many as an aphrodisiac.

Effect on the skin; Versatile oil, having a balancing action on sebum so making it effective on both oily and dry skins. Also a tonic and stimulating effect on the scalp promoting a more luxurious hair growth.

Precaution; Excessive use may lead to headaches and nausea.

One thing to remember: Ylang Ylang has a euphoric effect, promoting positive emotions in the user and calming and sedating in times of stress.
