A Neuromuscular therapy & Orthopaedic Sports Massage involves assessment and specialised treatment of muscles. A variety of muscle manipulation techniques are used during the treatment including Muscle Energy Technique, Positional Release and Trigger Point Release. The objective of the treatment is to reduce pain and return normal tone and function to dysfunctional muscles. These treatments are a gentle and effective way of releasing muscle tension in the body. During a Neuromuscular therapy & Orthopaedic Sports Massage it is important to identify the muscular imbalances and treat accordingly before these muscles are challenged with physical activity.
There are many conditions which can be treated with these treatments. The following is a list of conditions, but it is not all inclusive. – Vertigo, Headaches, neckpain, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, Tennis elbow, Golfers elbow and other types of tendonitis, back pain, sciatica, hamstring strain, leg pain and foot pain. Neuromuscular Therapy: FAQ
What is Neuromuscular therapy?
Neuromuscular therapy is a manual therapy with its objective to create balance between the musculo-skeletal system and the nerves system. Neuromuscular therapy is a method of assessing, treating and reducing pain in muscles and also preventing soft tissue dysfunction.
What can it do?
Due to the stresses sustained our muscles adapt resulting sometimes in dysfunction. This dysfunction can result in pain for the person.
A neuromuscular treatment can:
• Reduce pain by deactivate trigger points. Improve blood flow in these areas where there is a lack of blood flow in a muscle, called a trigger point
Note: Trigger points are areas in the muscle where there is an increase in metabolic waste resulting in an increased sensation which refers pain else where in the body.
• Normalize muscles and relax tight muscles.
• Reduce stiffness.
• Increasing range of motion and flexibility.
• Mobilize restricted joints and enhance the function of joints.
• Reduce fibrotic adhesions.
• Improve postural distortions. Note: if the posture is not correct the body will not cope with the forces applied to it and these forces will create micro-trauma throughout the
musclo-skeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns. This results in pain or
changes in sensations with in the body.
• Return normal sensation to an area.
• Reduce the discomfort caused by Nerve entrapment or compression of a nerve.
• Be valuable in the prevention of further injury.
Will it hurt?
During the Neuromuscular treatment techniques which cause the least discomfort to the client are used to return the client to pain free range of motion.
How long will it be before I feel a difference?
This varies depending on the severity of the condition, the duration of their condition and
the general health of the person.
The techniques employed can have an immediate effect on pain as a result within one treatment one may get some immediate relief. Depending on the complexity of the
condition many treatments may be needed to obtain lasting relief.
What will the therapist do?
The therapist will discuss with you the nature of your pain, it’s location and the type of discomfort you have. How the pain occurred can be key to identifying which muscle to work on. The therapist will assess the area but also look at you as a whole. Poor posture, imbalances in muscle systems will also be investigated. The Therapist will also consider your circumstances ie. job, past times etc. The treatment vary from individual but the muscles which are tight and short will be treated to reduce the tone relieving the strain on the muscles which are pulled.
Why does Anne recommend water?
The body needs to be hydrated to function properly. Depending on your body size 1-2 liters of water a day is recommended. Most of us are dehydrated which makes it more difficult for you muscles to work efficiently. Toxins are released by massage and drinking water helps eliminate these faster.
